NYIPodcast.com – The view from our recording studio

By Chuck DeLaney

Last year we decided it would be fun to create some podcasts, but when we got started we weren't sure what direction the project would ultimately take. It seemed to me to be an interesting project. For a long time I've thought that there should be more radio programs devoted to photography, and I've enjoyed working with Mike Garcia and Howard Lipin at www.phototalkradio.com. If you've never listened to their programs, I recommend a visit.

So, we started to investigate podcasting and that led us to create www.nyipodcast.com. We add a new segment about once a week, and I've had the pleasure of having conversations with NYI Instructors Walter Karling and Jackie Beckett, as well as Misty Rice and Tom Cavalieri, two NYI student advisors. Tom, incidentally, has recently left the staff to pursue other interests in the field of education, but he's kindly allowed us to keep his podcasts up on the site. I'll be working with more members of the NYI team in the coming months.

We're busy with a number of special projects right now at NYI – one of which we'll be announcing around November 1 – so we haven't had the time to reformat the podcast site to allow for easy searching of what we offer. This will come shortly, but I thought that nyip.com readers might enjoy a listing that's reasonably up-to-date of what you can find on the site if you scroll through the pages.

As you can see, we're working on presenting some basic concepts that all photographers need to understand, and sharing with any who is interested some of the thought processes and insights of members of the faculty. We're going to leave the "live from the big tradeshow" and "we test the newest SLR" to other sites. I like the podcasts I've heard on the www.popphoto.com site, and they have the resources to cover the equipment beat.

Everyone at NYI is excited about our podcasts, and we've got lots of ideas for upcoming programs, but I'd really like to hear from people with suggestions for topics that they would like us to cover. Feel free to send your ideas to me at .
